III. HOSTING A SERVER

----------------

NOTE: Activision does not provide support for running or maintaining a server beyond the initial stages of launching the server. Activision only provides support for the Windows server shipped with the game

NOTE: The maximum number of supported players is 32

You will first need to determine the server type which best suits your needs, Listen or Dedicated.

A Listen server is ideal for small to mid-sized LAN games, or small internet games where all participants are able to directly connect to the server via a known IP address. Listen servers are not intended to run indefinitely. Also, Listen servers allow the host to play the game on the machine acting as the server.

A dedicated server is ideal for large LAN or internet games. Dedicated servers are able to run for long periods of time with little maintenance if properly configured. Also, dedicated server capable of appearing in the master server list for internet games. It is not possible to play on a machine hosting a dedicated server.

· Launching a listen server.

1) Launch Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer.

IV. TROUBLESHOOTING

-------------------

-=VIDEO ISSUES=-

Most video issues can be resolved by installing the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's website.

ATI: http://www.ati.com

NVIDIA: http://www.nvidia.com

-=SOUND ISSUES=-

Most sound issues can be resolved by ensuring you have the latest AC97 drivers for your sound card installed. Check the website of your sound card manufacturer for the latest AC97 driver release if you are encountering problems with audio playback.

-=INTERNET & CONNECTIVITY ISSUES=-

COD4:MW requires an active Internet connection for online play. If you are having problems connecting to a server, make sure your Internet connection is active (try websites, other online games, etc).

If you are having problems hosting a server, please ensure that your firewall and/or router are properly configured. Activision does not provide support for routers and firewalls.

---------------

V. KNOWN ISSUES

---------------

DIRECTX CRASH AT LAUNCH

If you encounter the following error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." Try installing the latest version of DirectX 9.0c (found on the game disc, or www.microsoft.com)

CRASH WITH REALTEK ONBOARD SOUND CARDS

Users with Realtek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at www.microsoft.com

CRASH WITH SIGMATEL ONBOARD SOUND CARDS

There are issues with running the game and using Sigmatel(R) onboard sound cards. If you are experiencing this issue, and you are running the game from the primary partition, then you will need to install all Windows(R) Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com.

If you are running the game from a secondary partition, then follow the above instructions, in addition to downloading the latest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer.

MISSING SAVED GAME FILE

Saved games (or other saved data) are easily accessible through the game when COD4:MW is installed. Once it has been deleted, if you have not deleted the saved information, you have to go to a specific directory.

If you are on XP, this is straightforward. You go to the folder where the game assets used to be stored (default is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare) and look for the Players directory.

However, if you are running on Vista in a typical fashion (user mode with standard settings) you have to find the virtual store. This will depend on your username. You have to combine the path to the Virtual Store with the path from Program Files. In general terms this will be the following: [HDD]:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare. In order to see the AppData folder, click on Start->Control Panel->Folder Options. Click on the view tab, then click Show hidden files and folders.

POTENTIAL SAVED GAMES PROBLEMS

When playing COD4:MW on a Windows(R)Vista system, there is the potential for Saved Games to "disappear" if you switch from Standard User level to Administrator level of security. This is because of how Vista deals with saving files into the Program Files directory. If a user saves games, which are typically stored under the Program Files directory (by default in C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Players), they are not actually saved in that folder but in a Virtual Store. Windows(R) does this to protect the security of the Program Files folder, but allow legacy titles to continue to function on Windows(R)Vista.

However, when a person elevates to Administrative mode, the link to the Virtual Store will be broken and only files in the actual Saved Game directory (under Program Files) will be visible. Switching back to Standard User mode will restore the link. Interestingly, in user mode, both the files actually in the Saved Games folder and in the Virtual Store will all be visible, although you will not be able to delete any files in the actual Saved Games folder.

This issue will not occur unless the game is installed in a privileged area (e.g. C:\Windows or C:\Program Files), although this is the default. Also, this won't happen if the User Account Control (UAC) is turned off.

PUNKBUSTER AND INSTALLATION

When installing COD4:MW, the user has the option to install Punkbuster(TM). If the user chooses not to install Punkbuster(TM) during the game installation, but wishes to install it after the game is installed, then they will need to uninstall the game, and reinstall it, choosing to then install Punkbuster(TM).

Another option is to install the standalone installer for Punkbuster(TM). For Windows(R) XP, Windows(R) XP 64, and Windows(R) Vista Ultimate users, install the PBSETUP utility which can be found at http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php.

For Windows(R) Vista Ultimate 64, Windows(R) Vista Home Premium, and Windows(R) Vista Business users, install the PBSETUP and PBSVC utility which can be found at www.evenbalance.com

ISSUES WITH NETGEAR WGR614v5 ROUTERS

Due to an issue with this hardware revision of the router, players will be unable to host a game using the Netgear WGR614v5 router. Players will, however, still be able to join a game, as long as the proper ports have been forwarded

ATTEMPTING TO LOAD A PROFILE AFTER USER ACCOUNT CONTROL (UAC) IS DISABLED

If the player begins a game and creates a profile, but later disables User Account Control in Windows(TM) Vista, then their saved games will now be stored in (by default) C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players. If you are unable to see your profile, go to "C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\Virtualstore\Activision" and copy the Players folder from there, and place it in the new location.
